While gender pay gap is blatantly present across the world, India's National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGA) was one scheme meant to ensure that all its participants are paid equally. The scheme also aims to bring women into the labour force, 1/3rd of the jobs are reserved for women. However, the reality on ground is different. This video report form Bihar's Bhagwanpur Hath of Siwan district is an evidence of the gender pay gap and bias towards female workers. The 150 women of this village have been working under MNREGA for a few months. But their wages are being delayed constantly, and even when they get paid, the wages are less than the standard rates. When appraoched with the problem and a complaint letter, the officials have been largely unhelpful to these women. |
